Group Leader Betty Rae Miller of The Mojave Desert PlantFoodist Society Pod co-sponsors regular food distribution events in Arizona. An astounding 30-45 volunteers and Pod members help package food for those in need. Even during a pandemic, the group has been working diligently to get food to over 900 families in Bullhead City, Arizona. During a recent distribution, the Pod handed out a variety of whole plant foods in the emergency box, giving families: 3 pounds of onions, 1 pound of walnuts, a 3-lb bag of apples, a 3-lb bag of oranges, a 3-lb bag of potatoes, canned fruit and veggies, pasta, rice, and beans.
They also utilized a “No-Contact Drive-Through” policy to maintain social distancing while still getting food to those in need. Betty expressed her gratitude for Food Pantries that are able to provide fresh food to those who need financial support. She notes that with the support of local food banks, eating plant-based can be affordable and accessible for everyone. Prior to social distancing laws, the Pod would host cooking classes for food pantry patrons to teach them how to incorporate more plant foods onto their plates and to show how it is possible to be plant-based while relying on the food bank. While classes are canceled, the Pod continues to distribute food to their community.
