Ingredients
- 1/4 cup farro or barley
- 1/2 cup dried split peas
- 1/4 cup brown rice
- 1/2 cup dried green lentils
- 2 tablespoons dried minced onion
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried sage
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
Instructions
Assembling the Mason Jar
Layer: Using a funnel, add the farro or barley, split peas, rice, and lentils to a pint-size mason jar in the order listed, creating distinct layers.
Prepare Spice Packet: Combine all spices in a small snack-size zip-top bag and carefully fit it into the top of the jar.
Finish: Close the lid, decorate, and label creatively. Be sure to include the cooking directions below with the jar.
Preparing the Soup
Stovetop Method
- Remove the spice packet and rinse the lentils and grains.
- Combine the rinsed ingredients in a large pot and add the spice packet.
- Add 5 cups of water, 2–3 diced carrots, and 2 diced celery stalks.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
- For a thinner soup, add additional water as needed.
Slow Cooker Method
- Remove the spice packet and rinse the lentils and grains.
- Combine the rinsed ingredients in a slow cooker and add the spice packet.
- Add 5 cups of water, 2–3 diced carrots, and 2 diced celery stalks.
- Cover and cook on high for 4 hours.
Instant Pot Method
- Remove the spice packet and rinse the lentils and grains.
- Combine the rinsed ingredients in the Instant Pot, then add the spice packet.
- Add 4 cups of water, 2–3 diced carrots, and 2 diced celery stalks.
- Lock the lid into place and close the pressure valve. Cook at high pressure for 18 minutes. Once the cook time is complete, quick-release the pressure and remove the lid.
