Note: PPC encourages virtual activities during the pandemic. If Pod activities are taking place in person, PPC strongly encourages masks and social distancing for ALL Pod activities for the foreseeable future.

While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to devastate the United States and other countries around the world, Pods are beginning to meet in some countries where it is under control while keeping in mind safety and mitigation efforts. In early August 2020, PlantPure Communities chronicled the story of how many new Pod Leaders are hosting online events to follow social distancing guidelines. In late July in New Zealand, however, the new Vitality Nelson Pod was able to hold an in-person meeting. This image of a room filled with excited members brings encouragement and hope to Pods around the world.

Group Leader Anne Evans of The Vitality Nelson Pod held her first meeting on July 22nd, 2020, in Nelson, South Island, New Zealand. The Pod was delighted to have a great midwinter turn out of 22 members. After the Co-Leaders introduced themselves and shared their reasons for starting a Pod, they played the 4-minute introduction video from the PlantPure Communities website. The Pod then listened to a fascinating 30-minute presentation on the gut microbiome from a local doctor and Pod Co-Leader! Their take-home messages were: love your gut bugs and feed them well – with fiber from whole plant foods, stress less, move more, and get out in nature. There were lots of questions that the leaders and experts skillfully answered. With a new understanding of the connection between diet and health, members and Leaders alike enjoyed an excellent potluck featuring a Lentil Shepherd’s Pie, Asian Slaw, Chickpea Salad, Ginger Cake, and Granola Bars. Upon reflection, the members felt as though they were attending a party. New members gave many suggestions for future meeting topics, and they look forward to many more gatherings.
