Winter is the perfect time of year to catch up on some reading. It’s cold out and it gets dark early, and some of you will keep your winter wonderland around till April, so take this time to learn a few new things about whole-food, plant-based eating. We’ve checked with our team and gotten a list of everyone’s favorite books, some of which have been truly instrumental in our journeys.
So sit back, grab a cup of your favorite hot beverage, and peruse …
- We’ll start with the eponymous The China Study, from Dr. T. Colin Campbell, which closely examines the links between what we choose to eat and the diseases we suffer, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. This book also details why we’ve heard so little about the benefits of a plant-based diet, and how lobbyists and government entities are responsible for the majority of nutrition (mis)information available today.
- From Health Editor Jo Gustafson comes a recommendation for Dr. Michael Greger’s new book, How Not to Die. This is a long one, coming in at 562 pages, but it’s packed with all the information you could possibly want on why your body wants you to start on a whole-food, plant-based diet.
- Campbell has also recently published Whole, which delves into the science behind plant-based eating. He discusses how the foods we eat cannot be evaluated simply on the nutrients they contain, but must also be looked at in terms of how these nutrients interact with each other and with the body as a whole.
- Social Media Manager Hadley Johnson highly recommends Savor: Zen Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh joins with Harvard nutritionist Dr. Lilian Cheung to present a holistic perspective on food and wellness. This book is packed with information on nutrition, diet, and exercise, underscored with Nhat Hanh’s kind but firm teachings on meditation. This book may bring a new sense of balance to your perspective on food.
Stay tuned for more recommendations as we take a peek at the coffee tables and nightstands of other PlantPure team members later this week …
