Description

Sometimes the best gifts come in jars. Mason jar recipes are beautiful layers of wholesome ingredients, all made with love and kindness. They are quick to assemble, budget-friendly, and always appreciated. Just remember to include the cooking directions, and you have a beautiful gift ready for holidays, birthdays, showers, party favors, or any moment that deserves a little sparkle.


Ingredients

Units Scale
Lentils & Grains
  • 1/4 cup farro or barley
  • 1/2 cup dried split peas
  • 1/4 cup brown rice
  • 1/2 cup dried green lentils
Spice Packet
  • 2 tablespoons dried minced onion
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin

Instructions

Assembling the Mason Jar

Layer: Using a funnel, add the farro or barley, split peas, rice, and lentils to a pint-size mason jar in the order listed, creating distinct layers.

Prepare Spice Packet: Combine all spices in a small snack-size zip-top bag and carefully fit it into the top of the jar.

Finish: Close the lid, decorate, and label creatively. Be sure to include the cooking directions below with the jar.

Preparing the Soup

Stovetop Method

  1. Remove the spice packet and rinse the lentils and grains.
  2. Combine the rinsed ingredients in a large pot and add the spice packet.
  3. Add 5 cups of water, 2–3 diced carrots, and 2 diced celery stalks.
  4. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  5. For a thinner soup, add additional water as needed.

Slow Cooker Method

  1. Remove the spice packet and rinse the lentils and grains.
  2. Combine the rinsed ingredients in a slow cooker and add the spice packet.
  3. Add 5 cups of water, 2–3 diced carrots, and 2 diced celery stalks.
  4. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours.

Instant Pot Method

  1. Remove the spice packet and rinse the lentils and grains.
  2. Combine the rinsed ingredients in the Instant Pot, then add the spice packet.
  3. Add 4 cups of water, 2–3 diced carrots, and 2 diced celery stalks.
  4. Lock the lid into place and close the pressure valve.  Cook at high pressure for 18 minutes.  Once the cook time is complete, quick-release the pressure and remove the lid.
